An Interview with:
Sleeray
(Chairperson of the Golden Mop Society)
What first got you interested in Space Quest?
I played SQ4. In fact, I played the Xenon Street scene of SQ4, died at least 40 times, called the game stupid, and laughed as I watched it collect piles of dust on the shelf - I had banned this 'Space Quest' forever. *Have I said too much?* Anyway, one day while it was raining, I had just completed another game I was playing and decided, having nothing better to do, I would try SQ again. I played the game this time just to waste time, not to take it seriously. It was hilarious. I loved it. The plot was great. I wanted to know more about this 'Roger Wilco' and his 'Space Quests'. I purchased SQ5 (which is still my favorite) and that did it. I was hooked. I played more and more, becoming hopelessly lost in the SQ Collection. Soon, I could quote lines from the game; my speech starting sounding more like the narrator's. I started humming the themes of the games to myself. Basically, in a matter of a few weeks, I was thinking about Space Quest more, and then found out, I'd played them all. Where was SQ7? Hmmmmm..... Anyway, now I can't imagine not knowing SQ, and it introduced me to the adventure genre of games - one that I see is slowing dying out of the picture. Noooo....
What is it in the Space Quest series that has captivated your attention for so long?
It's not serious. I doesn't try to be. It's fun. I love adventure. There is actually a plot behind the weirdness. Roger Wilco is a common janitor (or was) who stumbles into these adventures, not for fame, but on accident. I love that concept!
Where do you come up with all the oh-so neat info on your page?
Good question. I don't know. I just think "I need some new info for my page" and start working on something. Probably not the best approach, but sometimes it's fun to see what comes out.
What are your reactions to the sudden onslaught of Space Quest web sites popping up everywhere?
Good feelings; bad feelings. I'm glad to see that Space Quest is getting the attention that it rightfully deserves. Maybe that will turn a few heads to see there is a following for the games - a great following. However, the originality factor for the new sites has, well, died. All the sites are like, here's a great article that was on WilcoWeb, but now you can look at it on my site too.... I feel that if it's already on someone else's page for a browser to view, there is no reason for it to be on others - that's what links are for. I would rather have 12 original sites than 50 sites that copy the original 12 sites.
Do you like doughnuts? If so, what is your favorite flavor?
Yes, chocolate, with sprinkles, covered with Morphin...
How do you stand on the issues of Full Motion Video and 3d-ness in games? Would you enjoy a Space Quest with either of these?
Actually, no. I love the style the last Space Quest was done in. I enjoy the graphics of SQ6 - that's how I would envision Roger. I could live with a 3d game (although I would believe it would then become too serious a game), but if there is ever a FMV Space Quest, I think the magic of the series will truly be lost.
Would you still buy Space Quest games if they were ever written without any help at all from the original Two Guys from Andromeda?
Yes. I would rather it be from one (or both) of the Two Guys, but Space Quest is still Space Quest, so I would buy it anyway.
Do you remember Buston Freem?
I don't know? Does he remember me? How? I'm supposed to be mysterious to all. *Paranoia sets in* Why is everybody looking at me??!! Stop staring at me... I didn't do anything! Where are they? They're watching me!!!!
Which is your favorite Space Quest and why?
Space Quest 5 - it had the most interesting plot, it was hilarious, and I got to love the characters in that game more than any other game. To me, it was just the greatest SQ game there ever was...
Who is your favorite character who is NOT a main character?
The little long-necked golden alien that really needs to use the restroom in the Orion Belt in SQ6. His (or her?) swaying motion, like a metronome, counts the time - foreshadowing the urgency the future will hold and that the small amount of time to solve it in is ticking away. (Probably not, but it sounds good!) ; )
What is your favorite continent?
You know, the one that borders an ocean and has those mountains. I think it has some rivers, too. Maybe some lakes. You know - you've been there before. Haven't you? Go ask Buston Freem...
Note: This page is in itself a parody of Troels Pleimert's Celebrity Interview Library, @ Wilco's Domain, and no offense is meant.
Note: At the end of each of my e-mail interviews I added a little paragraph, and Sleeray responded to it, so I've decided to include it here.
Feel free to add any comments you want and to go off in irrelevant tangents, speak in tongues, switch languages, or write it all in backwards pig-latin.
Thanks for the interview and forgive my excessive, extravagant, extreme wordiness. Anyway, I guess no interview would be complete without a plug for my site so here it goes:
