An Interview with:
Justin Barker
(Webmaster of the Space Quest ComPost)
What first got you interested in Space Quest?
Well, back in 1989 my Dad got an old Epson 286 or 386 laptop. This was a great computer with a monitor that displayed 4 vivid colors- gray, blue, blue, and I beleive the 4th color was gray. It came packaged with Kings Quest 4, which was an OK game I guess. But it was the Sierra advertisment for the all new Space Quest 3 that had me captivated- I saved my pennies for what seemed like an eternity- when I finally got the game I loved every minute of it. Even w/ 4 colors the Arnoid and Monolith Burger still were stunning. You can guess that I about peed cauliflower when I saw it on a freind's PS2 with EGA monitor...;)
What is it in the Space Quest series that has captivated your attention for so long?
The humor. I am a big fan of sci-fi, so I enjoy seeing my favorite movies and shows parodied. The cool graphics and storylines have always kept me coming back, too. Also, Roger Wilco has a multi-faceted personality that is also appealing from a neo-marxist's point of view, although his overall place in society promotes a non-darwinistic theory.
-wait- what I meant to say was "Roger does neat stuff"
Do you see a glass as half-empty or half-full if it has equal amounts of water and air in it?
I see the glass a full of chocolate milk with that cool Nestle Quik powder at the bottom so when you finish drinking the milk you get a tasty treat of chocolate powder and luke-warm milk.
What are your reactions to the sudden onslaught of Space Quest web sites popping up everywhere?
I think the site is great as long as you don't steal other peoples ideas, graphics, HTML, look, etc. I think that just happened on the Web recently, but the memories elude me at the present...um..Anyway- seeing new sites pop-up is really cool 'cause someone is devoting free time when they could be watching TV or eating applesauce or playing the banjo to make a site devoted to Space Quest. I think it is getting alot harder with each new site to be original, though. Each person has something different to offer. This means that the next guy has a harder job ahead of him to make something original. I'd rather see a site with one halfway decent idea than another with 22 of other people's ideas.
Which one was the better title, Hz. So Good or Radio Shock?
Radio Shock! Where else can you get the latest Pocketpal processors with SUX technology!
How do you stand on the issues of Full Motion Video and 3d-ness in games? Would you enjoy a Space Quest with either of these?
FMV in a Space Quest game? Nope. Not unless they follow the cast suggested at the Broomcloset which'll prolly never happen. :_( 3d stuff is pretty cool- if not overused. I liked how they used some 3d stuff in SQ6 with Roger's ship and all and landing on Delta Burksilon V. In short- 3d- yes but only in cut scenes, Full Motion Video?- nah- I'd rather have a fuzzy toejam.
Would you still buy Space Quest games if they were ever written without any help at all from the original Two Guys from Andromeda?
Yep, 'cause I'm gullible. As long as the game was created buy a guy with the inherent nuttiness of Scott Murphy, Mark Crowe, or Josh Mandel. If the game was created soley in a board room like Star Trek is now I'd hate it. You've got to have one or two zany guys calling the shots- not some smackhead marketing people who want to get the game into a wider audience and not the true fans.
Which is your favorite Space Quest and why?
SQ3 is tops- the graphics amazed me, the humor was at its zenith, and the story was extra cool! It also holds a dear place in my heart as being my first Space Quest. To this day Disk2 is lodged somewhere in my left ventricle.
Who is your favorite character who is NOT a main character?
Favorite charcter? Hmmmmm... got to be the Sariens. I don't know why- I just thought they looked cool and were bumbling, bloodthirsty morons. If you want me to pick one- its the Sarien whose footsteps you hear while in the bottom floor of the Arcada and then turns around after you jump back in the Arcada. I thought his character was well developed and held a pivotal role in the overall plot consistency...and he was red, too.
What does antidisestablishmentarianistically mean?
To supercalafragallisticate via an electroencephloragraph while in a state of somnambulism.
Note: At the end of each of my e-mail interviews I added a little paragraph, and Justin responded to it, so I've included it here.
Feel free to add any comments you want and to go off in irrelevant tangents, speak in tongues, switch languages, or write it all in backwards pig-latin.
Last words? Well visit the ComPost at its all new location hosted by the great folk at aim4game. (http://www.aim4game.com/wilco/) I'd like to thank everyone who visits my site and offers their great comments! I really love that and thanks alot to all of you all! Making webpages is my most favorite thing to do and having people appreciate you for your work is the coolest.
I'd like to thanks Kevin Wallace for the interview, all of the people at Sierra who bring us that thing we call Space Quest, my agent, my cats Sadie and Spike, my doctor for fixing that darn post-nasal drip I've been having, and Sydney- I'll have those limbs returned- soon!
